A Few of My Favorite Things-The Shoe Edition

14 May 2010

I will admit that I’m fond of brown paper packages, particularly those involving string. But I’m especially fond of smart, comfortable, eco-savy shoes.

So without further ado, my picks for the week.

Guffly Vegan Canvas Sneakers

My favorite sneaker company was purchased by Nike in 2003.  Production was then moved overseas.  Nike is not well know for its ethical production or human rights track record.  So when I found this alternative, I got extremely excited.  To the point of squealing out loud.

Why they are Eco-Chic:

This shoe has it all,  organic cotton canvas uppers and sustainably harvested rubber soles.  They are fair trade certified, yet the price point of 54.99 to 56.99 is comparable to the Nike produced shoe.

Simple Shoes Satire

I have loved every pair of simple shoes that I have owned.  I selected the Satire, show here, as it was my latest acquisition.   They are durable, comfortable and tops in my book.

Why they are Eco-Chic:

Simple Shoes are known for using recycled and sustainably harvested “virgin products.”  Like most environmentally minded companies, Simple Shoes are very transparent about the values in which they believe.  Simple Shoes employees verystrict code of “ecoEthics” towards their work force.  Actual retail price is $55.00

TOMS Yellow Newport Cordones

To finish up the round up, I’ve included the Cordone Model (in a charming sunny yellow) from TOMS.  They are constructed from canvas, inspired by sail cloth, feature a solid rubber out-sole and a soft leather insole.  (There are Vegan TOMS available.

Why they are Eco-Chic:

“With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One.”  This simple statement is printed inside of every pair of TOMS shoes.  TOMS was founded four years ago, this May (Happy Birthday TOMS).  Since then they’ve shoed 600,000 children.  And that is fabulous.  While not “eco-Friendly” in the conventional sense, TOMS is helping to protect the future.  TOMS Cordones retail for $69.00

Here are my footware picks for this installment of “My Favorite Things.”  Leave a comment if there is an eco-shoe you particularly like or just because.
