Lucas said it was too difficult to vote for my first project.

So I made it easier.  Now it’s point and click.

For My First Trick…

22 March 2009

I’ve been trying to decide what my first Eco-Fashion project will be.  I’ve narrowed it down to two choices:

“Conscientious Cargo Pants” or “Camisoles for a Change” (OH I am so witty)

Conscientious Cargo Pants:

CargoCargo Long

Inspired by the cargo pants above.  My interpretation will also convert from pants to capris, which is high conducive to bike riding ( they are called pedal pushers for a reason.)  The inspiration pants are created from cotton, which I assume is non organic, as most organic items are advertised as such.

My cargo pants will be made from a 7.0oz 55% Hemp 45% Organic Cotton blend fabric.  I plan to make two pairs.  One will be treated with dye derived from henna, giving it a nice pecan or bronze color.  One will be treated with fustic derived dye, which will give me a sage or olive green, depending on what I use as a mordant.

The fabric will cost me about $9 a yard, 2 yards per pair ($36.) I will need copper and iron mordant, $2 each ($4.)  My henna will cost $5 dollars and the fustic will cost $12 ($17 for pigment.)  Buttons and assorted notions will probably run an additional $10.

I estimate that the entire project will cost me nearly $70 dollars.

or….

Camisoles for a Change

I plan to make 3 camisoles, from 3.5oz 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton blend.  They will be solid and each will have interesting detail work of its own, like pintucking, or lace insert.  I hope to make one a muted mauve color, one indigo blue, and leave one a lighter shade of natural, by brightening it using hydrogen peroxide.

This project will require 3 yards of fabric at 7.50, ($22.50).  For pigments, I will require Cochineal for the mauve ($10.50), Indigo for the blue ($10.50), and Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide for the ivory ($10.50).

I estimate that this project will cost me about $54.00.
